Roosevelt Corollary

Roosevelt Corollary

To the U.S., the Monroe Doctrine was practically dead to the other countries. In this cartoon, Roosevelt is swinging his stick at the other countries. The new diplomacy is basically the Monroe Doctrine. The countries in Europe are trying to get to the Latin America side. Cuba wasn't allowed to enter a treaty with any other Europeans country. So, the U.S. put troops to protect and watch over the Latin Americans. Other people might say that the European countries might be trying to help. However, you don't know if the other countries could be planning a sabotage. Also, the cartoonist put all the countries to be smaller than him because with the Roosevelt Corollary, he practically almost rules over them. If you look closely, you can see that Roosevelt has his eyes on the European countries and is swinging his stick at them.

Spanish-American War

Spanish-American War

The Spanish-American War was a battle between the U.S. and Spain that ended Spanish colonial ruling. It started in Cuba when Spain was treating them brutally. Many Cubans were homeless or starved and died because of it. The U.S. heard about it and did something to end it. The U.S. declared Cuba's right to be independent. This war started on April 21. George Dewey was the U.S.'s general. Uncle Sam is trying to decide which country he wants to order or in this case, help. The waiter is President McKinley, and he will do anything Sam tells him to. On the wall, there is no Spain because they are choosing who to have on their side. I think it's interesting how the countries sound and look like actual food orders.

Panama Canal

Panama Canal

At first, Columbia wouldn't let the U.S. build the canal through their land. However, after the rejection, the U.S. set up a revolution that led its independence of Panama. Panama and the U.S. organized a treaty to claim that the U.S. could build their canal. The Panama Canal was built between 1904 and 1914. In this cartoon, the cartoonist message is that Roosevelt is digging his way through Panama and piling all the dirt on Bogota. However, he looks over a captain waving a flag that says, "treaty." Below him are ship ready to go through. Other people might say that he is ignoring the treaty because he is half way down with the canal. Also in the background, you can see other ships coming the way he is digging. I believe that building the canal was a smart thing to do because although it separated to countries, it saved time by couple hours or days.

Open Door Policy

Open Door Policy

The Open Door Policy states that no country cannot form a monopoly with China. In this political cartoon, Uncle Sam holds the key to China. The U.S. got the key because they were the ones who came up with the idea. Many other countries wait outside to get in. The U.S. was quite excited about this policy. With it came great privileges, the food is so rare in America that they brought some back and many stores and restaurants opened. Business in the U.S. was booming. The cartoonists message about his was that the other countries thought that Uncle Sam had all the control in the world. Of course it makes sense if he holds the key to China. Others might say that there would be some exaggeration  the man on the other side look excited to see his new country friends who will be paying him for their goods.

Roosevelt Corollary

Roosevelt Corollary

It all started where in the Dominican Republic, their government stopped paying off their debts. the Monroe Doctrine originally stated to keep all European nations of Latin America. That is why in this political cartoon, an European country has a claim to take the Republic of Santo Domingo away. However, Roosevelt as a gun with the label that says "Monroe Doctrine". There are many examples of labeling in this cartoon. For example, the ship represents the U.S. the cartoonist is stating that Roosevelt wants the Monroe Doctrine to affect all European nations, since that's why he made it in the first place! Other people might disagree or say that the other country wants to help him. But as the card in his hand says, he wants to take control of the country. Also in the background, you can see that their are other ships ready to shoot.

Annexation of Hawaii

Annexation of Hawaii

In this picture, Uncle Sam is trying to take care of four countries. However the reals tory started in 1893, when the U.S. was trying to overthrow the queen. Marines stormed the island without Presidential approval. They forced the queen to be removed from the throne. At the time, Grover Cleveland was inaugurated President. When war broke out with Spain, the U.S. used Hawaii as a naval base. Hawaii was territory until they were granted to be a state in 1959. the cartoonist message about this issue is that the other countries were exaggerating and acting like babies. they are getting all the attention and needing to be taken care of. Other people might think that this cartoon has some sort of symbolism since the babies are labeled some country and look like that countries people. I personally believe that the babies are wanting attention from Uncle Sam because they are now being controlled by him.

Panama Canal

Panama Canal

In this cartoon, Roosevelt is shoveling away those who don't support him and the Panama Canal. Under him are his workers getting ready to shovel up some dirt. The cartoonist message was probably that Roosevelt doesn't need unsupporters, they just get in his way. he also put a lot of labeling in there (e.g. Panama Canal). That is why he is shoveling them out. Others might say or think that he should not have separated two countries. They should have built the canal somewhere else. On the other hand, Other people might think of it as a great idea. It cuts down time and travel for it could take weeks just traveling around South America. I am an anti-imperialist, but i do like the idea. Although America had to pay Colombia a lot of money, it was worth it. We can travel to the Pacific from the Atlantic in just a couple of hours or very few days!

Purchase of Alaska

Purchase of Alaska

The Purchase of Alaska happened on March 28, 1867. Russia offered to sell Alaska in 1859. Alaska was brought to the U.S. in 1867. Senator of State William Seward bought Alaska for $7.2 million dollars. Seward swooped up Russia's offer and ran with it. When he bought Alaska, many people called it "Sewards Folly." The United States soon realized that they bought a huge chuck of ice. However, not to long after that, Alaska was then governed by a military naval. They wanted to impose the mining laws, so the U.S. constituted a civil government. Seward vindicated when a major gold rush came to the Yukon's.  Alaska was then known to be the gateway of gold Klondikes. Alaska didn't become a state until January 3, 1959.
In this cartoon, Seward and the president push a treaty Russia and America.  However, in the background, Russia walks away with a bag full of cash.
